Davis Youth Robotics (DYR) League is a program aimed at engaging 4th through 8th grade students in competitive robotics in an after-school setting. Through the DYR League, students learn skills like teamwork, programming, communication, engineering and math principles in a fun, collaborative environment. Each DYR team is run by parents coaches, with technical support from our trained High School Student Mentors.

Frequently asked questions
Q. When do DYR League Teams meet?
A. DYR League Teams can start meeting as soon as their teams are assigned in June. Teams will generally start meeting regularly in August, once or twice per week. DYR Teams generally stop meeting after their last competition (November or December), unless they qualify for State Championships, which is held in February.
Exact meeting times differ from team to team, depending on team member availability.
Q. Where do DYR League Teams meet?
A. Just like meeting times, this will differ from team to team. Some teams arrange to meet at a school classroom, while others will meet in a family's home or garage. Because the Vex IQ Field can easily be broken down into smaller pieces, all of the team equipment can be packed up into a couple of boxes between team meetings. This allows teams to store their equipment easily and move it between meeting sites if needed.
Q. What is involved in being a DYR Parent Coach?
A. Every DYR League team need two Parent Coaches. Parent Coaches do not need any prior experience. Click here to read the 2017 DYR Coaches Handbook.
Q. How many students are on a DYR League Team?
A. DYR League Teams generally have 6-8 students each.
Q. My student is in 9th grade, can they participate in the DYR League?
9th grade students are not eligible to participate in DYR. We encourage all 9th grade students to join our high school robotics team, the Citrus Circuits. Please contact us here to learn about joining the Citrus Circuits.
Q. My student is in 3rd grade (or younger), can they participate in the DYR League?
A. Yes, but with reservation. We recommend the program for 4th through 8th grade students, but parents are welcome to register their younger students. Please understand that, while we will try to pair students with those of similar age, there may be larger age gaps with younger students. This could impact the student’s overall experience in the program, but this varies by student.
Q. I coached a DYR team last year, and we'd like to keep that that team together. Should all my families re-register via the DYR League Registration for 2017?
A. You do not have to have your whole team re-register for 2017 if your team is staying together. DYR League Registration is for getting new teams together and finding parent coaches for those teams. However, if you have any new families joining your team directly, please send us one of the parent's contact info so we can add them to our DYR email list. Also, if you would like a few more students assigned to your team, let us know about that as well.
Q. My student was on a DYR team last year, and we'd like to stay with that team. Should I register my student via the DYR League Registration?
A. You absolutely can fill out the registration sheet again. However, if your team from last year is continuing, registering via the DYR League Registration sheet is not required. If you do choose to fill out the registration sheet, you can enter in all the information for your current team, so we make sure to not assign your student to a different team.
