2022   Season

Houston   championships

Our 2022 season ended with earning our place as one of the best teams in the world at the 2022 FIRST World Championship in Houston, Texas. This year records our 10th appearance at the World Championship, and playing at Einstein field for the eighth year. We seeded third in the Hopper division and we were selected by Team 1706 Ratchet Rocker Robotics from Wentzville, MO, alongside Team 5454 Obsidian from Bentonville, AR, and Team 4213 MetalCow Robotics from Bloomington, IL.
After several close matches, we emerged as the winner of the Hopper division. We then won two of our matches on the Einstein field, and finished fifth overall. At the competition, we took the Autonomous Award sponsored by Ford, for our robot’s successful and reliable function during the autonomous period at the beginning of each match and our automated climb at the end of the match.

Silicon   Valley   Regional

We wrapped up our last competition of the season as Regional Winners alongside Team 254 The Cheesy Poofs from San Jose and Team 7419 QLS Tech Support from Dublin. The event took place at San Jose University from April 7-10 with 59 teams competing from California and the Dominican Republic.

At the end of the qualifications, we ranked second with a record of 15-0, a total of 35 ranking points, and an average score of 115.77 per match. After being selected by Team 254, we finished elimination matches undefeated. For the first time in our team history, we also received the Engineering Inspiration Award, which is given to celebrate outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering. When presenting the award, the judges said: “Their services enable every team to be the best in show, allowing these ‘avocados’ to continue to grow. This team’s eloquence really blew the judges away, they empower others to excel each and every day.

Sacramento   Regional

From March 23 -26, we participated in the Sacramento Regional for the first time in three years! During the event, we went against many great teams from California, Chinese Taipei, and India. At the end of the qualification matches, we ranked third overall with a 10-1 record at the end of the qualifications.

In the finals, we formed an “a-lime-ance” with 254 Cheesy Poofs and 5458 Digital Minds. Together, set a high score of 180 in the semifinals while advancing to the finals! During the finals, we went against 973 Greybots, 5417 μbotics, and 8020 Cyberpunk. Both alliances gave it their all, but in the end we emerged as winners of the Sacramento Regional.

In addition to our Regional win, we also won the coveted Chairman’s award! The Chairman’s award is the most prestigious award in FIRST that honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST. With our Chairman’s win at the Sacramento Regional, we became eligible to compete for the Championship Chairman’s Award, at the 2022 World Championship in Houston. Our Chairman’s team worked tirelessly on their submission with help from parents and 1678 alumni. Thanks to all who helped with our submission, we couldn’t have done it without you!

To put the cherry on top, one of our students Emily X. won Dean’s List Finalist! Emily has repeatedly shown qualities of leadership and gracious professionalism, and has inspired members on our team to educate, empower and excel.

Hueneme   Port   Regional

“Citrus got real!” We started off our competition season during Week 1 at the Hueneme Port Regional in Port Hueneme, CA from March 3-6.
For four days, our team participated in practice, qualification, and finals matches where we went against teams from California, Wyoming, Mexico, and Singapore. During our qualification matches, we were able to achieve the highest score in Week 1 of 140 points. At the end of quals, we went 11-1 and ranked first overall in the competition.

Citrus Service, our outreach program that aids other robotics teams at competition with everything from programming to building bumpers and fixing major mechanisms, was able to help 34 out of the 35 teams that participated at the regional.

With our alliance partners 4414 Hide Tide and 589 Falkon Robotics, we were able to go undefeated in the elimination matches and finals on our way to winning the Hueneme Port Regional. In addition, we won the Autonomous Award sponsored by Ford, which celebrates the team that has demonstrated consistent, reliable, high-performance robot operation during autonomously managed actions. It recognized not only our five-cargo autonomous routine, but also our automated traversal climb and color sorting system that allows us to avoid collecting cargo from the opposite alliance.
