DiStem

Diversity in STEM (DiSTEM) is a program that our team launched in the spring of 2018 with the goal of empowering underrepresented groups in our community to become active participants in STEM. Through fostering inclusivity and developing and supporting programs that provide opportunities to those facing distinct disadvantages, we hope to inspire individuals to consider STEM as a viable career path, contributing to a more diverse and dynamic STEM community.

Disteminars History

As part of our DiSTEM initiative, our Racial Diversity in STEM seminars (RADiSTEM) and Women in STEM (WiSTEMinars) are designed to offer a forum where a diverse range of voices from undergraduate, graduate, academic, and professional STEM environments can share their experiences. By hearing from these speakers, we strive to broaden our team members' perspectives and deepen their appreciation for the value of racial diversity in STEM. Ultimately, we hope to empower everyone to drive change in our community and workplace, fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment for all. Since 2014, we've hosted several seminars, both for our team and the broader community.

WISE

Our Women in STEM Empowerment (WISE) program organizes monthly events at the Mary L. Stephens Yolo County Library, inviting children to a day of science and discovery. With engaging, hands-on activities like operating robots, experimenting with LED circuits, and creating LEGO parachutes for miniature figures, kids can enjoy a fun and educational experience. Our goal is to empower girls and support female diversity in the STEM field. Click here to find out more about our upcoming events.

Wistem History

Throughout 2014 to 2016, our team has hosted three Women in STEM seminars. Throughout the years, we have invited many successful women in the STEM field such as Michele Wong, the CEO of Synergex, Denneal Jamison-McClung, the director of the UC Davis Biotechnology steprogram, and Jennifer Choi, a lecturer in the department of Biomedical Engineering at UC Davis. The speakers talked about their experiences and possible future innovations. The goal of these seminars is to expand the community’s knowledge and appreciation about women in STEM. Furthermore, the events helped to inspire young girls to join the STEM field in the future.
